Etsy Love: Dollhouse Miniatures

Hello friends! How are you doing? I can’t believe summer is coming to a close and I’m getting my little girl ready for Kindergarten! Crazy! She’s gotten so big! So grown up and it has gone by so fast…

With my little girl growing up too quickly, perhaps it explains my complete fascination with these adorable, too precious for words, dollhouse miniature sweets! Oh my goodness…they are just too cute!!

These tiny little works of art were created by the talented Pei Li. Her pieces are truly amazing and so detailed! Check out her Etsy store here.

Grace’s dollhouse may need some of these….I know she would love them!

Book club night & farmhouse style

Last night, I hosted my book club – a fabulous group of some the most interesting and intelligent woman I have ever met! (Lucky me!) When I attend a book club night, I am guaranteed a wonderful night of fascinating conversation, good doses of laughter, delicious food and wine and a lovely ambiance. Each lady is a talented host and cook. So, when it comes time for me to host, I want to give them that same decadent experience. I put a lot of pressure on myself to get it right and last night, I am proud (and relieved) to say was a hit!

The concept for my table design began the night before. I knew I wanted to use my latest treasure as the centerpiece – a beautifully rustic French wine bottle carrier.

(this beauty will be on sale in my shop very soon!)

The wine carrier makes me think – Farmhouse style – so that’s what I went with…

It made the perfect caddy to display the utensils…

A variety of textures – burlap, linen, lace, silver, glass, ceramics – creates that farmhouse feel. Rustic but elegant. Can you tell I had fun?

I knew we would be dining outside so I kept it in the same theme. I am so grateful to my beautiful purple hydrangea bush! She supplied all the florals!

Hydrangeas are so fabulous because they are like a hundred flowers on one stem! Popped these freshly cut blooms into crystal cut glasses and my simple table arrangements were done!

Had to put out my newly acquired antique French pitcher too! This one was sent to me from a woman in Normandy! So pretty with a vintage lace apron tucked inside…

The trailing wisteria over head completed the purple, white and green color palette…

I did spend a lot of time on decorating but I didn’t forget the FOOD! I whipped up a huge batch of Martha Stewart‘s Macaroni and Cheese! So very naughty, with a whole stick of butter and an obsene amount of cheese! However, I was so caught up in my decor that I didn’t take a picture of it…oops…so here’s one via Smitten Kitchen

I must say…it was delectable and everyone went back for seconds! Yah! A fresh garden salad and chocolate cake for dessert completed the simple but comforting meal.

All in all it was another fantastic night with my book club gals! Love you girls!

Mother’s Day in Seattle

Chris surprised me with a Mother’s Day trip to Seattle! Yah! Early Sunday morning, we loaded up the car and off we went. We rented a sweet little condo in the heart of Belltown. Perfect!

This was our view…

You can’t go to Seattle without a trip to Pike Place Market

Here is the little stowaway that came home with us and became the star in my crab linguine.

Brunch at Lowell’s was pure perfection and my mocha…blissful…

Grace and Princess (her puppy) enjoyed their buttermilk pancakes and watching the ferries cross the bay as proud papa looked on…

I went home with a huge bouquet of tulips! What a fabulous Mother’s Day…lucky me. I felt truly blessed.

Tea for Two

Last week, I picked Grace up from school at noon so we could go have lunch together. She begged me to take her back to the “magical tea house”…also known as the Lady Di’s Tea Room. How could I say no to that? Of course, my camera joined us…

Oh so serious…not for long…

the most lovely sweet potato soup and cheddar and tomato sandwiches…yum! Cheese on toast for Grace…

Sweet primroses blooming outside the window next to our table…

for dessert a plate of the most delicious English shortbread! It went fast…I almost missed a photo op!

Sitting there with her, watching the rain outside and nibbling our sandwiches, I couldn’t help but wonder if we were making a memory that would stay with her. I hoped so. My mom used to take me out for lunches like this, just the two of us and I always felt so special. I had her undivided attention and she smiled and listened to all my stories patiently. If I can make Grace feel that same love, that same importance…then perhaps, one day, she will do the same for her child. When I so often feel that I’m not doing enough for her…it felt good to see the happiness in her eyes and hear the excitement in her voice.

A good Mom day.

Royal Wedding Cake Designer

I don’t know about you, but I’m really excited for the Royal Wedding! A prince, a princess, a gorgeous dress, a famous city, an amazing ring…I mean what’s not to love?

Growing up in Australia, we were very focused on the Royals, following their every move and relishing in all that lovely (and not so lovely) gossip. I even got to see Princess Diana in person when she and her entourage paraded through Sydney’s Royal Botanical Gardens one summer. It’s such a vivid memory to me. Her gilded horse-drawn carriage glided through the crowd as onlookers craned their necks to catch a glimpse of her beauty. She waved and smiled – a perfect princess.  As the carriage came closer, I ran to the front of the crowd and (I swear) she looked right at me and waved! I frantically waved back, grinning like a fool! I was starstruck. I was twelve and I can see it like it was yesterday…

With a childhood memory like that, it’s no surprise I’m a little obsessed with the upcoming Royal nuptials! Today, I found myself perusing the official Royal Wedding site and  I couldn’t resist checking out the chosen cake designer, Fiona Cairns. A perfect wedding needs the perfect cake, of course! No pressure. From what I can tell via Fiona’s website, I think she will deliver a gorgeous, whimsical cake…check out these pics of her work…

Beautiful right? So will you be watching the event? My TiVo is all set to record!

Etsy Love: Macaron Magic

Lately, I’ve been wanting to buy macarons. Not because I have a craving, or I want to give them as a gift…I just want to take pictures of them. Yah…I know it sounds weird but I have seen the most gorgeous photos of macarons and I want to give it a try! I’ve almost ran out to Pix to get some…but I decided to head to Etsy for some inspiration first! My dear friend, Amy referred me to the beautiful work of Havilah…a local Portland photographer! Her Etsy shop – dearmachine has some lovely images!

Check out these delightful photographs of this most famous French cookie…

So pretty right? I love that something so simple as a baked good can look so special. Almost as enchanting as a cupcake…

xo,

p.s. want to try making them yourself? here’s a recipe from Martha. ;)
