Guest Post: Design Shuffle & Gorgeous Fireplaces

Hello friends! I’m excited to have a guest writer on the blog today from Design Shuffle! Take it away, Susi…

Hi, I’m Susi, a writer over at Design Shuffle, a fantastic social media site for designers and design lovers to network, share inspiration and showcase projects. I’m excited to be here at Grace & Ivy today as a guest. My guest post is all about lighting a fire of inspiration for fireplaces. I’ve pulled together eight of my favorite fireplace decorating ideas. Hope you enjoy! Thanks for letting me stop by and visit.

Fireplaces

Dress up your fireplace with art or a mirror. Fill the mantle with pretty objects, seasonal flora, frames or books. Create a charming place for extra firewood with a basket, wire basket or box.

Fireplaces
Lighting a fire and relaxing in a comfortable place to sit is the ideal way to spend a chilly day or evening. Multiple seating options around the fireplace create the space for conversation, reading or napping.

Fireplaces

This modern room and fireplace are sleek and unencumbered by too much decoration. A gold starburst mirror above the modern fireplace is the perfect adornment; just the right thing to draw the eye.

Fireplaces

Painting the walls around a fireplace a deeper color and keeping the mantle the same color as the molding draws the focus to the fireplace. This interior design in a cream and mushroom palette creates a calming, cozy space to lounge.

Fireplaces

This lovely winter decorated fireplace is a symphony of subtle winter colors. The taupe wingback chair and white painted mirror would work with any seasonal decoration and various living room designs.

Fireplaces

Decorating the firebox with a stack of birch logs gives this fireplace style without a roaring fire. The birch logs tie in with the black and white palette.

Fireplaces

If you have a non-working fireplace as in this bedroom design, dress it up with an antique grill or fire screen. You can put candles in the firebox to create a warm, twinkling light similar to fire.

Fireplaces

If you have an outdoor fireplace, don’t forget to decorate it also. Seasonal gourds, garlands and wreaths look just as lovely on an outdoor fireplace mantle as they do indoors.

Little B & B on the Prairie

I’ve  always loved Rachel Ashwell‘s Shabby Chic style. To me, it feels so luxurious, yet relaxed and of course her interiors are full of romantic, vintage treasures that make me swoon. So, when I heard that she had opened up her own B & B in Texas, I had to go take a peek…

Aptly named – “The Prairie” – it instantly appealed to me. Can you see why?

Isn’t it dreamy? I would love to stay here on our next trip to Texas!

Pretty Rooms: Fall inspired

Behind our house, the light in the forest is changing. A beautiful and subtle shift where the sun no longer rises high overhead but instead dances among the trees, dipping the garden in gold. The once vibrant purple hydrangea now bow their heads, weary, faded and burnished with bronze. The first leaves are beginning to fall. What a magical time, what a gorgeous season.

I want to spread this loveliness throughout the house. Little touches of fall. Nothing over the top…just subtle hints that celebrate Autumn. Inspiration was needed. Here are some my favorite fall looks for the home…

I love how soft shades of chartreuse are used on this mantle….this would work well for me, since I have blues and greens through out my living and dining room…

I am also kinda in love with white pumpkins…so pretty and they go with everything!

How cozy is this room? Lovely!

This candle idea is genius! Simple strips of tissue paper wrapped around glass hurricanes…brilliant! Instructions here.

Are you feeling the Fall Love? How will you be decorating your home this Autumn?

xo,

Vintage Home Bars

Hello there! I hope your summer has been fabulous. It’s going SO fast, isn’t it?

So, I just got done posting on my other blog about my love of Vintage Seltzer Bottles. These amazing historic objects are now being sought out, collected and displayed in homes. While they look beautiful anywhere you put them, they fit perfectly nestled among other pretty barware.

With Mad Men influencing style and celebrating the age of martinis, people are pulling out their liquor and putting it on display. And why not? It looks gorgeous! Check out these oh-so-glamorous vintage bar set ups. LOVE!

This weathered trunk makes the perfect pedestal for your bar. Its rustic textures play off the sparkle and polish of the bottles and silver tray. The mirror doubles the glamor. And I just love the mod Lucite chairs.

Drool. (note to self – buy a vintage bar cart asap!)

one word – AMAZING!

make your bar mobile with a wheeled cart!

French flair and elegance at its best. You know you would receive a tres chic concoction from this bar, perhaps a Pompier? Never heard of one?…neither had I but they were a popular cocktail served in Paris during the 1930’s! Made with a black currant liquor (crème de cassis), dry vermouth and club soda, it is meant to be absolutely delicious on hot summer days! Gotta try this one.

Your bar cart doesn’t have to be shiny and new, this well-worn industrial cart has a great masculine, urban feel.

Adore this one. So feminine! In the market for a vintage bar cart? Check out these I found for sale on Etsy1, 2, 3.

Don’t want to cart it? No worries, use a table and corral your barware on trays to help define the intention of your display.

Or proudly show off your cocktail fixings within a bookshelf. This is a fantastic idea for someone living in tight quarters.

So many gorgeous ways to add the glamor of a home bar to your space.

Do you have one set up now? I would love to hear how you did it…

Cheers!

Mrs. Teacup goes to Finland: Update

Hello! OMG! I have been so busy! I can’t believe how many things I’m selling in my little vintage shoppe on Etsy!  The people at the Post Office are becoming my new friends! I am also completely stunned at all the boxes I’m shipping to Australia! Thank you my fellow Aussies! I love you.

Okay, so I wanted to update you on Mrs. Teacup. A while ago, I posted about my first sale to Finland – a delicate little teacup.

Well, she arrived safe and sound and her new owner (Nina) was sweet enough to send me photos of her new home…and some lovely shots from around town too!

This first one is from the town of Porvoo – a beautiful, quaint village where many people vacation during the summer. Nina was here, relaxing with her family, before heading home to Helsinki to pick up her tea cup from the post office. Doesn’t it look charming? I couldn’t help myself…I researched Porvoo and found some more gorgeous pics…look how pretty!

I gotta add Porvoo to my list of places to visit…

Welcome to Nina’s home – Helsinki. She lives in a part of the city called, Vallila.

Nina describes Vallila as laid back community with an intimate, village atmosphere. With fresh fruit growing in community gardens and beloved cats meandering the quiet streets, she says it has been a wonderful place to raise her daughter. It has a hip side to it too, with many Finnish designers in residence. A brisk, 30 minute walk will bring you to the heart of Helsinki, full of culture, restaurants and plenty of activity. Vallila is also famous for its historical wooden houses (see above) which were almost destroyed in World War II. Thankfully, they have been preserved and are treasured by the locals. Nina lives in a lovely old home that was built in 1925. Let’s have a peek into her study where her new (old) teacup has found its spot.

Awww…she looks perfect on Nina’s desk. It’s so wonderful to see a once discarded object be reborn as a loved and well used possession.

Thank you Nina for sharing theses beautiful images from your home and thank you for purchasing this teacup – it was clearly meant to be yours.

Friday (mini) Escape

Happy Friday, my friends! I don’t have time today for a full Friday Escape but I had to share with you this amazing home outside of Lisbon. It belongs to designer, Monica Penaguião, who obviously has impeccable taste! It’s no wonder her gorgeous store, Poeira enjoys much success. Enjoy the tour and imagine yourself stretched out next to that pool…sigh….

I’m pretty sure you would have to pry me away from this table…so dreamy!

I love the pops of rich color against all that white!

And I’m back at the pool…what a surprise. Seriously, I could lay there all day!

Hope you have a very relaxing weekend!
