Art Love : Marie Laurencin

Hello friends,

How’s life? Hope you are enjoying the changing of the seasons. I do so love Fall!

I’ve been taking the online course – “Studying under the Masters” with Jeanne Oliver and I’m eating up all the information and reveling in the feeling of artistic growth! Along the path of studying, my thoughts were brought back to an artist that I love but never truly researched before – Marie Laurencin.

She was a French painter (1883-1956) and lived in Paris for most of her life. She hung out with other powerful artists of the time including, Pablo Picasso, Jean Metzinger, Albert Gleizes, Robert Delaunay, Henri le Fauconnier and Francis Picabia. She was celebrated as one of the few female Cubist painters. Her style only emulates the elements of Cubism early on and quickly fades after World War 1.

bd0aaafad85c57e30f94b17c5ae6fed6Her style moves toward an ethereal look of soft colors, gentle curving shapes and doe eyed female figures. These resonate a beautiful feminine power and grace – a serenity and grounded energy that I find captivating. I had the pleasure of seeing her work at the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris when I was there in 2012. I feel deeply in love with her work.  What do you think?

One of the most important things I have learned from this online course is to NEVER EVER stop learning about Art. It feeds my soul and is such a wellspring for inspiration and growth.

If you are in a rut, creatively, I encourage you to research a favorite artist, experiment with a medium you’ve never used before or sign up for an online Art course! Don’t give up on your creativity just because you’ve hit a wall. Find a rope and climb over it! Be open to your potential and trust your path.

xo,

Ivy

Mixed Media Workshop

Hi all,

Life is funny sometimes isn’t it? Just when you think you are on steady ground and ready to rock and roll, it pulls the rug out from under you. Don’t worry…nothing major is going on, just a glitch really – last night my new website got wiped out! :(

People – please don’t ever update your WordPress theme without backing up your site! Duh. I know. Stupid, but that’s what we did. We are currently trying to restore it and it has made me into a stress ball. Breathe. Breathe.

Anyway, I wanted to make sure you could still access all the info regarding the workshop so here it is:

Also here is the Facebook event page if you want to sign up there.

Come join me in my home and create something special for you or someone you love just in time for the holiday season!

We will be creating whimsical portraits and dreamy landscapes, (however you are free to go in another direction as well.) Don’t fret if you’ve never painted a face before – I have some great tricks to share with you! Through a combination of collage and painting, a lovely and unique portrait will emerge! A muse, goddess, fairy or maybe even a self portrait – you decide! In our dreamy landscape project, we will be combining images from vintage postcards and other ephemera to create dreamlike, surreal and ethereal landscapes that beckon the soul to wander and explore. Once these compositions are complete, we will be incorporating encaustic layers and techniques to truly add another dimension of depth and beauty to these works!

I will be guiding you through several techniques such as collage, painting over collage, adding stamps and vintage papers, paint application, using stencils, creating layers with wax (encaustic), fusing, painting with wax and much more! Each student will be provided with two birch panels, pre-plastered for your convenience, plus access to my encaustic supplies, vintage paper stash, stamps and more!

If you have never painted on plaster, you are in for a treat! This luminous material provides an amazing backdrop for your composition, giving a wonderful texture and making the piece almost glow from within. Combined with the dreamy effect of encaustic wax layers this combo makes for a stunning finished piece of work! You will fall in love with this process!

Your day with me will begin with coffee and pastries by the fire while we all settle in and prepare to create. A full gourmet lunch with wine will be served and of course chocolate, snacks and steaming cups of hot coffee or tea will be available throughout our luxuriously creative day! The fire will be roaring, candles lit, the rain falling outside (most likely!) and together we will be blissfully creating the day away!

You will be encouraged to create at your own pace with one on one assistance from me and will leave with at least one finished piece of artwork, two if your process moves more quickly.

So treat yourself to a special day just for YOU! Honor your creativity, beat the holiday stress, learn something new and connect with other like minded souls.

I will be honored to spend the day with you and be your guide on this creative journey!

xo,

Ivy
